Angiograms of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

- Vascular Care Centre, 2008

AAA’s are caused by a gradual weakness in the aortic wall, causing a bulge in affected sections. Over time, the effects of arterial pressure can cause the bulge to rupture, resulting in massive internal hemorrhaging and death if left untreated.

Rupture of an AAA occurs in 1-3% of men aged 65 and over and the mortality rate is around 70-95% (Lindholt, JS, et. al, 2005).
