Science is the poetry of Nature.

A friend of mine thinks that space exploration is a waste of resources which could be used to provide food, shelter, & medical care to the world's poor. This approach frustrates the hell outta me, because (while proper care of all humanity is absolutely necessary) I can't argue against it without down-playing human suffering. Do you have a better approach or any advice in arguing against this perspective?

I think that a solid argument would be that we shouldn’t downplay our passions or our loves. If we’re going to get rid of space exploration, then lets get rid of the arts, music, anything that has absolutely nothing to do with taking care of people who are suffering. I mean, yes, bad things are happening to people in the world and that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive to help them or make their lives easier, but we never know what could come from space exploration. We dove ourselves into the jungles of our planet and found medicines that have saved many, many lives. So who knows what we’ll find out if we step out of our realm of comfort? It seems a little far-fetched but I personally have to know what’s out there.
