I don't agree that it's a person's "fault" that they may not be scientifically literate. The default state of knowledge is ignorance. Not the negative kind of ignorance that comes from willful disdain for knowledge, but the way that I am ignorant about, say, knitting. The choice to learn is an active one. What we must do is show people why that energy is well spent, and how rewarding the choice to learn can be. Accessibility of information is universal, access is not.

I don’t think it’s entirely their fault either. What I was trying to explain was that a person who does have access to said information and has an interest in scientific literacy for the reasons explained in my post about why someone should be scientifically literate ought to use that access even if it might be a little limited compared to say a person residing in a more open government. I completely agree with what you’re saying. My argument with the person was more about; if you have the access, use it. Thanks for the input J, it’s always welcome here.
